Howth to Dun Laoghaire Charity Walk

Well 5 friends set out from Howth on a very very cold Saturday morning for the 26Km walk from Howth to Dun Laoghaire in aid of Save The Children of Eldoret.  Its was a great day with a little pit stop on the way for a nice pint of the cold stuff.. mmm

The premis for the walk was an email from my friend Clare
“I watched the Ross Kemp Kenya special on Sky 1 on Monday and was so moved by what I saw that I am just unable to shake it.  I am never usually affected by what I see on TV, its just TV and we have all grown up seeing some fairly horrendous imagery between movies and news reports.

There is a part in the show that highlights the street children of Eldoret, who live in a community where all are addicted to glue.  When I watched it I just broke down and I just cant seem to get it together since.  I was telling Al about it the next morning and burst into tears again.  There is a scene in the show, where a toddler falls over and her mother, instead of comforting her, hands her a bottle of glue.  Seeing a mother giving glue to her toddler who cant have been any older than two has absolutely broken my heart.  and watching a man I assume to be the father of a young girl picking her up from the street where she is lying, too stoned on glue to move…. I have never witnessed anything so moving.  Im fairly sure that this has all been sparked by the fact that the little kid was the same age as Anna, but for whatever reason, I still cry now when I think about it.”

Well its been a while since I have got around to posting between work work and freelance work I have been up to my eyes as well as fracturing my ankle (sniff) so here is a quick update that I will be adding some new projects to my portfolio in the coming weeks.

I have just put the finishing touches to www.explorelightcommissions.com, this was a nice project to work on as Ed and Peter wanted to keep the existing design already in use on explorelight.com but simply remove the shopping cart functionality and add some more informational pieces as well as a more comprehensive navigation.  Slideshowpro was used for the gallery, with wordpress on the backend with some nice js for the menu.

Next up I will be doing some more work for Ed and Peter two great photographers building a shop using CubeCart, Slideshow, some fancy backend php and js and finally to complete the work for Ed and Peter which included a Newsletter template for Campaign Monitor and a flier I will be revamping edgordonphotography.com to bring it in line with all 4 sites.

Also in the pipeline is a site called PlantAWall for a fantastic invention but I’ll say no more for now and finally another revamp and restructure for the guys at icom technologies

Comments as always welcome, and check back soon to see the work

Upgrade to Wordpress 2.5

I have just upgraded to WP2.5 and bar a few minor mishaps

Maintanence Mode

I used Maintenance Mode in order to have a temporary splash page, this worked fine until all the new files were copied over and then I was unable to gain access to wp admin to upgrade. I renamed the MM plugin, ran the upgrade and all was then aok.

NexGen Gallery

NexGen Gallery required an upgrade which was a nice and simple one click operation as well as a number of other plugins all of which went well. I re-implemented the mods I made in NexGen and another hurdle was jumped.

Plugins

Finally a few of the plugins I had been using would no longer work e.g. advanced-admin-menus

.. apart from that the upgrade was seemless ..

Check back soon for my thoughts on WP2.5 but your comments are also more than welcome

IE8 will use Standards mode by default

ie-vs-wasp

Microsoft has reversed its decision to make IE8 behave like IE7 unless specifically requested and will interpret web content in the most standards compliant way by default.

Background
Microsoft were to use a new site versioning feature in IE8; a meta tag which would be used to define which version of the IE rendering engine should be used:

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=8" />

This caused an outrage in standards groups because this statement stated IE7’s rendering engine would be used by default. This meant that IE7s poor rendering engine would be used unless the above meta tag was included in your web page.

Now Microsoft have done a U-turn and have stated;

There is a concrete benefit to Web designers if all vendors give priority to interoperability around commonly accepted standards as they evolve

It seems Microsoft have taken on what the developer community have been saying / shouting which is a complete turn around compared to their usual strategy to ignore. Even there long term goals are now going in the right direction

Long term, we believe this is the right thing for the web. Shorter term, leading up not just to IE8’s release but broader IE8 adoption, this choice creates a clear call to action to site developers to make sure their web content works well in IE.

Hopefully this new strategy will filter down to other Microsoft products and a standardisation harmony will follow ..
